In 1998 Hamburger SV was appointed the team of the 20th century, by Kickers Magazine, with having won 15 Oberliga Nord and three Bundesliga championships. The most talented football players such as Franz Beckenbauer, Felix Magath, Uwe Seeler , Rafael van der Vaart, and Mehdi Mahdavikia, have all played for Hamburger SV. However it was Mehdi Mahdavikia who made it to top of the list of “Best Offensive winger” in 2002-2003.
Mehdi Mahdavikia, born 24 July 1977 in Tehran, Iran, joined Hamburger SV in 1999 after Bochum’s relegation to Budesliga 2. During his time in Hamburg he played an incredible 208 games, scoring 26 goals, which is really amazing for an offensive left back. The 36-year-old known for his attacking runs , crossing, speed and dribbling, as he has previous experience as a right winger and at times has played as a striker. After having 5 successful seasons with hamburg, he was then awarded Hamburg Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004 by both kickers magazine and Bundesliga fans.
In 1997 he was awarded the Asian Young Footballer of the Year award and was considered Iran’s best player in the 1998 France, FIFA World Cup after scoring that beautiful header against USA. However this wasn’t the only time that Mehdi was awarded the Asian Player of the year, in 2003 he was also given the award by the Asian Football Confederation.
On 2 March 2013, after the defeat of Perspolis FC again Sepahan FC in Hazfi cup final match the 36-year-old announced that he will be retiring at the end of the next Persian league match . However this wasn’t the case as Mahdavikia’s last match was against his former side, Hamburger SV in June 2013 .
Mehdi is currently taking coaching classes in Germany.
